BUY USA – Sakura Bloom

winsakurasilkWe started selling Sakura Bloom Ring Slings after Cheyenne talked me into it at our first ABC trade expo event in 2011.  She had one in her personal stash and swore to me that people would love them.  I had hired her for her babywearing expertise, so we placed our first order.  I let her choose the colors and styles.  She included one silk in with the rest being linen in our first order.  The linen slings sold well from the beginning.  Here in Texas, linen is a nice light weight cool option in the heat of our brutal summers.  They are quick to use.  And affordable.  That poor silk sat for so long.

In 2013, Sakura Bloom had a booth at Dallas Market.  It was a quiet market that year, and we got to spend a lot of quality time with the owners, Lynne and Eric.  And we complained to them that while we had no trouble selling linen slings, we could not see the benefit of the more expensive silks.  Lynne pointed out to us that silk was actually cooler than linen to wear in the heat.  That it would breath better and was far more supportive.  Armed with new knowledge, we came back and were able to tell our customers the benefits of silk.  And that is why you see so many glorious silk ring slings in the Nappy Shoppe community.  We also came back having formed a new friendship.  One of the high lights of our trips to the ABC trade each year is visiting with Lynne and Eric.    They are a fun friendly, down to earth couple.  They care about their business and their retailers.  Unlike some manufacturers, they care about the value of their brand.  Sakura Bloom is one of the best selling brands in our store.  It is not hard for this to be the case with a quality product, and a manufacturer who we consider a friend.

History of Sakura Bloom Ring Slings.

Lynne’s sister, Carole, is an anthropologist.   She was studying South east Asia traveling to India and Nepal a lot. As Carole was pregnant at the time, she was fascinated with how babies were carried in these countries.  They used carriers out of necessity, something that back in 2005 she did not see happen here much.  She joined, which at the time was a small community of women wearing and many making their own carriers.  There were virtually no stores.

When Lynne got pregnant with her daughter Teja in 2005, Carole gave her 5 different carriers to try.  First off she started with a pouch style.  Lynne says she cringes to think of how she wore Teja back then.  She is not alone, I was the same with Braden.  Little did we know.  It was all a learning time. At 6 months of age, Teja did want to be cradled any more, she wanted to be upright and sit.  So Lynne pulled out the silk ring sling that her sister had given her.  She fell in love with this carrier. When a friend of Lynne’s in London got pregnant, she asked her sister where to buy a ring sling the same as what she was using.  The answer was, no one makes these! Lynne enlisted the aid of her seamstress mother, and with different colored silks, made another ring sling.  Lynne continued to sew the ring slings.  Have fun with different colored fabrics.  She sent one to her sister.  Her sister was wearing her baby in it, when she visited a baby boutique in Colorado.  The owner wanted them for her store.  So Lynne was asked to make more ring slings.  So she made 10.  It was 2006.  At this point there was no plans for a business, but it soon became obvious that was to become one, so in 2007 Sakura Bloom was born.

From the beginning, Lynne knew she wanted her business to be sustainable.  She watched women start carrier businesses and go out of business soon after when they did not price their products high enough to cover costs etc.  So Lynne did her research on pricing, and priced her slings for her business to survive.  She also learned the importance of keeping brand value, and as such rarely discounts.

Eric and baby Jai 2008.

At first Lynne did all the sewing.  But soon it was obvious that she could not do it alone.  She was introduced to a bridal shop seamstress called Amelia. Amelia was from Italy, and after critiquing Lynne’s sewing technique came up with a higher quality product.  For the first three years of business, Amelia did it all from her basement, including shipping. In 2010, it was too much, and Amelia needed to move on.  So Lynne found a factory in the small industrial town of Fall River, in Massachusetts.  And that is where Sakura Bloom is still manufactured.

In 2012 Lynne could not continue to administrate the business alone, so her husband Eric, came on board full time.  Lynne found that they did not need to live near where the slings were produced.  As long as they had their laptops, and internet access, they could run their business.  They now have three employees.  Leigh in market (and so much more), Jill who does social media (she is the pregnant voice behind Instagram), and Tiffany in customer service and manages wholesale.

Lynne lives in California with her husband Eric, and two children, Teja 9 and Jai 7.  And here is a little tidbit for you, Lynne and Robyn of BabyHawk are very close friends, and Robyn lives in California too.

For our BUY USA event, we are giving away a Simple Silk Sakura Bloom ring sling in Shadow.  To enter, just come in between Memorial day and Independence Day 2015, and when your purchase includes a product made in the USA we will give you a ticket to enter into the drawing.  If you are a VIP blue rewards card holder you will get two tickets.

A pinch me moment, for sure. 9 years ago these were my fingers pushing layers of gorgeous, vibrant silks under the foot of my grandmother’s old tabletop singer sewing machine. When my daughter, Teja, was born in 2005, babywearing wasn’t a household term and it was next to impossible to find unique, different styles of baby carriers in local stores. Big box stores were the only option for most people, and they offered pretty much one style of carrier and definitely nothing made locally. I didn’t shop in big box stores for myself and I didn’t want to start with my baby. I wanted to support small, local, family run businesses like ours. So, I made it my mission to try and bring the amazingness of babywearing to the boutiques dotting our downtowns. When I was pregnant I would drive over an hour from our house in MA to the cutest little boutique in CT that sold cloth diapers just to see the colors and be able to talk with someone about what we would need or want. I knew I wanted people to be able to do the same with our slings. Feel the textiles. Try the sling on. Shop Locally. That boutique became one of our very first retailers ❤️ Papaya Patch in West Hartford, CT. Today we have 300 small, local, independent retailers (mostly women owned! 💪👭💪) around the world helping new parents get comfy in their Sakura Blooms! 🌸🌸🌸 So much ❤️ for all of our amazing retailers lovingly representing Sakura Bloom each and every day and for each and every one of you, our amazing customers, out there shopping locally with them 🙌❤️🙌. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 😘xo @lynnebanach ✨🌸✨ #allthehugsandkisses #liveyourdream #beoriginal #stayfocused #blazeyourowntrail #riseandgrind #madeintheusa #shoplocal #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness #mompreneur

Jewelry by Remade Hart, one of the vendors at our last Bazaar.

Well here is your chance.  Come set up your table in our community room at the store and show us what you have.

Cost is $10.  This cost is not refundable.  This allocates you a space at a table that is approximately 30 inches by 30 inches.  This measurement varies from table to table as some of our folding tables are narrower.  But we will try to give an equal amount of space to each vendor.  Please note only sellers need to book their spot.  Buyers simply turn up on the day.  Transactions will be between the buyer and seller, not between Nappy Shoppe.  Nappy Shoppe is simply providing the space.  So be sure to bring cash for change, and cash to buy.

Date: Saturday February 2nd at 1pm-5pm.

Please note: Sellers will need to fill in an application to be a vendor at our event.  We want to make sure that products sold at the bazaar are safe for everyone.  If you go to book your spot, it will show the cost to be $1010.  After you have filled in the application and been approved to be a vendor, you will be sent a code to reduce the cost to $10.

We will feature approved vendors on our facebook page, and on this blog, and through any other means we can.  Our last event was a lot of fun, and we had some wonderful hand crafted goods that many bought for Christmas.

Dapper Snappers

When I saw someone post the Dapper Snapper to one of my cloth diapering groups, I knew I just had to stock them even though they are not really diapering related.  My two older boys are like their dad, long and lean. Finding pants to fit them has always been a challenge.  If I find pants that are long enough, they are always too big in the waist.  If I find them fitting at the waist, they might as well be wearing capris!

While they say they fit sizes 1 – 5, I have to disagree.  I am using this item on my 7 year old, Connor, just fine!  And there is talk of adult sizes soon!

Connor in pants that constantly fall down, BEFORE we put on the Dapper Snapper.

So just how does the Dapper Snapper work?  Well it will only work in pants that have belt loops.  And so far I have had to do it for my son, Connor, as he cant put it through the loops once his pants are on.  Once he puts on his pants, I thread this thing through the back loops of his pants and snap at each end and this tugs his pants nice and tight for him.  In this picture, I put the snaps on one side on one setting, and on the other side tighter in.  I was able to get a good custom fit for my skinny boy.  He loves this.  He often has his hands in his pockets just to hold up his pants!  The first time I put it on him, he came home from school, doing his usual holding his pants up with his pockets.  I put the Dapper Snapper on his pants, and he lifted his arms up and was jumping up and down excited that his pants were not falling down.

Connor AFTER we put on the Dapper Snapper. His pants fit him well now and are no longer sliding down his hips.

If he was wanting to put it on himself, he would have to put it on the pants before he puts them on.

And yes, we have tried belts, but the boys do not like them as they make going to the bathroom more difficult for them.  The beauty of the Dapper Snapper is they do not have to undo it to undo their pants.  The only thing I have to watch for is that it comes off his pants before they go in the wash.  Yes it will wash just fine, but I want it to put on other pants.  I can see myself getting more of them for that reason though.  And he has already asked me for other colours …

The Dapper Snapper is made in the USA.  It is a good quality Elastic available in a large variety of colours.  It uses durable metal snaps to close it.

Double Wet Bag

Braden and the double wet bag we use for Mothers Day Out. He knows what it is for as while I was taking this shot he was saying "Nappy".

I have been stocking the Mama Pouch by Baby Bug Creations for some time now, and when I was sitting with a couple of cloth diapering friends, we were talking about wet bags … and it came up, that wouldn’t it be great if we could have the double bag system of the mama pouch combined with the size of the Nappy Shoppe Large wet bag. One of the mums had her little one in part time day care, and she said she would love such a bag for that.  Another took her two babies to work with her for her part time job, and she wanted a bag that would last the day, and divide up the two babies diapers.  So I said, well let me see what Ashley of Baby Bug Creations says .. and as I am writing up the email asking if she would make this bag for Nappy Shoppe, they are saying things like.  Make sure it has a nice big handle, oh and make the zippers different colours, so you know which side is dirty and which side is clean, and choose cute fabrics!

The double wet bag has two inner bags made of PUL that are waterproof, different coloured zippers, and a cute outer cotton fabric.

So the large double wet bag for Nappy Shoppe by Baby Bug Creations came about.  And this has been a huge hit and has recieved great feed back.  So much so, I had to buy one myself when Braden started going to Mothers Day Out, 2 mornings a week a couple of weeks ago.

So yes, the mum of the baby in part time daycare did buy one.  And after she had been using it a week or so, she posted the following to facebook.

“I am in love with this wetbag. I got it just about a week ago and love it. It fits all my diapers and even wipes. It was great at the park yesterday, I just snapped it onto my stroller and I had wipes, diapers, my keys on one side and dirty diapers on the other. My DD school loves it too, they clip it by the changing table and don’t have to worry about her diapers getting seperated anymore. Thanks Sharni for stocking this, I will be getting more!”

It was these comments about daycare that had me getting one of these for Braden despite the fact I own several wet bags already (I do make them after all for Nappy Shoppe :) ).  So we rock up to Braden’s first day of Mothers Day Out.  I am carrying the wet bag.  It is so pretty, that no one even knows what it is.  They think it is a really nice diaper bag.  And then I explain it to the teacher.  I point out that Braden’s clean diaper, clean wipes, and a change of clothes were in the side with the blue zip.  The brown zip side is empty right now, but it is for the dirties.  Just throw them in there.  No other child is cloth diapered at the Mothers Day Out program (for now …).  I have kept it simple, just a couple of AIO diapers (Thirsties, Monkey Doodlez and Drybees have all been used with ease by the teacher).  Braden’s sippy and lunch box are in a small starwars back pack that he wears in himself.  It all works very nicely.  I pick him up.  Ask the girl, “Did you have any issues?”  She said, no the diapers were really easy to use, the bag was great.  So the bag was a huge success, and made the cloth diapering process of not throwing things away so much easier for the staff at the center.

So if you are looking for a great wet bag for day care, a long day out, or even a day at the beach for swim suits etc.  Then I am sure this one will work for you.  And you don’t need to hide it.  It is great for showing off!

Well it’s official. I care more about the fashion on my son’s butt than in what I wear myself :) Check out Braden’s pumpkin butt!

Braden in his pumpkin cover
This cover he is wearing is made by a fellow WAHM friend, Ashley Beal of Baby Bug Creations. I stock her mama pouches (double wet bags) and will soon have in stock her night time fleece covers (which have gone through a bout of Braden testing at night time). Ashley is making fleece covers for daytime use that have a holiday theme. So if you are like me and have to have a diaper for every occasion (forget the purse and shoes for every occasion!), then these are an affordable must have.

Keep an eye out for her very cute night time fleece covers coming soon! They will feature the ever popular ooga booga print!

(Oh and that red spot on Braden’s nose, and fading brusie on his forehead … he finally got to play outside after weeks of rain here in Texas, was so excited, he face planted into the concrete patio.  It doesn’t seem to bother him though.)

MaggiePie Handmade Creations

Dragon HatI found MaggiePie Creations via a link posted to one of my groups when someone was asking for a place for good knitted hats for boys for this winter. I fell in love with Melodie’s creations immediately and said I wonder if she could do a dragon hat. The person who posted the link, said she was a friend of hers, and she bet she could, just ask. So I asked. And look what she came up with. I had my hat within a couple of weeks of asking that first question about if she could make such a hat. It didn’t take us long to nail out the details of what I wanted. She knitted it up, and even with shipping from Canada, I had my hat very quickly.

Check out her site, because she has quite a few photos of what she can make, and if you have something in mind, strike up a conversation with her, because she was very willing to take up the challenge of a dragon hat with me.

Braden in Dragon HatAnd am I satisfied with the end result? Oh wow are we! It exceded my expectations. This is a beautifully hand crafted hat. I told her my son would be nearly 2 when he would recieve it for Christmas, and while it fits him now, it has give in it so I know its going to fit him at least two winters.

Here are a couple of photos of Braden wearing it. I hope to get better ones. Sometimes getting that little boy to stand still enough for a photo when alone with him is a challenge :)
