BUY USA – Sakura Bloom

winsakurasilkWe started selling Sakura Bloom Ring Slings after Cheyenne talked me into it at our first ABC trade expo event in 2011.  She had one in her personal stash and swore to me that people would love them.  I had hired her for her babywearing expertise, so we placed our first order.  I let her choose the colors and styles.  She included one silk in with the rest being linen in our first order.  The linen slings sold well from the beginning.  Here in Texas, linen is a nice light weight cool option in the heat of our brutal summers.  They are quick to use.  And affordable.  That poor silk sat for so long.

In 2013, Sakura Bloom had a booth at Dallas Market.  It was a quiet market that year, and we got to spend a lot of quality time with the owners, Lynne and Eric.  And we complained to them that while we had no trouble selling linen slings, we could not see the benefit of the more expensive silks.  Lynne pointed out to us that silk was actually cooler than linen to wear in the heat.  That it would breath better and was far more supportive.  Armed with new knowledge, we came back and were able to tell our customers the benefits of silk.  And that is why you see so many glorious silk ring slings in the Nappy Shoppe community.  We also came back having formed a new friendship.  One of the high lights of our trips to the ABC trade each year is visiting with Lynne and Eric.    They are a fun friendly, down to earth couple.  They care about their business and their retailers.  Unlike some manufacturers, they care about the value of their brand.  Sakura Bloom is one of the best selling brands in our store.  It is not hard for this to be the case with a quality product, and a manufacturer who we consider a friend.

History of Sakura Bloom Ring Slings.

Lynne’s sister, Carole, is an anthropologist.   She was studying South east Asia traveling to India and Nepal a lot. As Carole was pregnant at the time, she was fascinated with how babies were carried in these countries.  They used carriers out of necessity, something that back in 2005 she did not see happen here much.  She joined thebabywearer.com, which at the time was a small community of women wearing and many making their own carriers.  There were virtually no stores.

When Lynne got pregnant with her daughter Teja in 2005, Carole gave her 5 different carriers to try.  First off she started with a pouch style.  Lynne says she cringes to think of how she wore Teja back then.  She is not alone, I was the same with Braden.  Little did we know.  It was all a learning time. At 6 months of age, Teja did want to be cradled any more, she wanted to be upright and sit.  So Lynne pulled out the silk ring sling that her sister had given her.  She fell in love with this carrier. When a friend of Lynne’s in London got pregnant, she asked her sister where to buy a ring sling the same as what she was using.  The answer was, no one makes these! Lynne enlisted the aid of her seamstress mother, and with different colored silks, made another ring sling.  Lynne continued to sew the ring slings.  Have fun with different colored fabrics.  She sent one to her sister.  Her sister was wearing her baby in it, when she visited a baby boutique in Colorado.  The owner wanted them for her store.  So Lynne was asked to make more ring slings.  So she made 10.  It was 2006.  At this point there was no plans for a business, but it soon became obvious that was to become one, so in 2007 Sakura Bloom was born.

From the beginning, Lynne knew she wanted her business to be sustainable.  She watched women start carrier businesses and go out of business soon after when they did not price their products high enough to cover costs etc.  So Lynne did her research on pricing, and priced her slings for her business to survive.  She also learned the importance of keeping brand value, and as such rarely discounts.

Eric and baby Jai 2008.

At first Lynne did all the sewing.  But soon it was obvious that she could not do it alone.  She was introduced to a bridal shop seamstress called Amelia. Amelia was from Italy, and after critiquing Lynne’s sewing technique came up with a higher quality product.  For the first three years of business, Amelia did it all from her basement, including shipping. In 2010, it was too much, and Amelia needed to move on.  So Lynne found a factory in the small industrial town of Fall River, in Massachusetts.  And that is where Sakura Bloom is still manufactured.

In 2012 Lynne could not continue to administrate the business alone, so her husband Eric, came on board full time.  Lynne found that they did not need to live near where the slings were produced.  As long as they had their laptops, and internet access, they could run their business.  They now have three employees.  Leigh in market (and so much more), Jill who does social media (she is the pregnant voice behind Instagram), and Tiffany in customer service and manages wholesale.

A pinch me moment, for sure. 9 years ago these were my fingers pushing layers of gorgeous, vibrant silks under the foot of my grandmother’s old tabletop singer sewing machine. When my daughter, Teja, was born in 2005, babywearing wasn’t a household term and it was next to impossible to find unique, different styles of baby carriers in local stores. Big box stores were the only option for most people, and they offered pretty much one style of carrier and definitely nothing made locally. I didn’t shop in big box stores for myself and I didn’t want to start with my baby. I wanted to support small, local, family run businesses like ours. So, I made it my mission to try and bring the amazingness of babywearing to the boutiques dotting our downtowns. When I was pregnant I would drive over an hour from our house in MA to the cutest little boutique in CT that sold cloth diapers just to see the colors and be able to talk with someone about what we would need or want. I knew I wanted people to be able to do the same with our slings. Feel the textiles. Try the sling on. Shop Locally. That boutique became one of our very first retailers ❤️ Papaya Patch in West Hartford, CT. Today we have 300 small, local, independent retailers (mostly women owned! 💪👭💪) around the world helping new parents get comfy in their Sakura Blooms! 🌸🌸🌸 So much ❤️ for all of our amazing retailers lovingly representing Sakura Bloom each and every day and for each and every one of you, our amazing customers, out there shopping locally with them 🙌❤️🙌. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 😘xo @lynnebanach ✨🌸✨ #allthehugsandkisses #liveyourdream #beoriginal #stayfocused #blazeyourowntrail #riseandgrind #madeintheusa #shoplocal #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness #mompreneur

Buying USA made where possible is important.  Why?

From www.madeintheusa.com:

American people spending American dollars on American products equals American jobs. These jobs are the foundation of a thriving economy.

And there is many more benefits than that simple one alone.

So over the 6 weeks between Memorial Day and Independence day we are going to introduce you to some of our favorite USA companies that we buy product from for the store. And when you buy USA made products we will give you a ticket to put into drawing for some of our favorite USA products.  (Two tickets if you are VIP blue card holders).

Happy Australia Day 2014

Adbanner

So as many of you know I am an Australian.  And until I moved to the States in 2000, I used to celebrate my country’s holiday with a barbeque, sometimes fireworks etc.  In fact it was similar to how I now celebrate Independence day on July 4th.  Australia day is January 26th.  It marks the anniversary of the arrival of the British fleet in 1788 at Sydney Cove in New South Wales.  And as it is Summer in Australia right now, it means a lot of summer time partying going on down under.  This year it falls on a weekend, so that means the party is bigger than normal.

So I have decided we should celebrate it in this store, after all we are the home of the purple kangaroo!

Come in to the store between Jan 23rd and Jan 27th 2014, and you can earn $5 Nappy Cash with every $50 spent.  You can then redeem this Nappy Cash during the month of February 2014.

Happy 4th Birthday to us!

Braden living it up on the fabrics we stored in his room.

Nappy Shoppe is four years old!  It was in August 2008 that we made our first sale of our ever popular G-Flappers.  Braden was a few months old, and my primary tester of the products that I was making.  I started with my sewing machine and a serger in my sewing room in my house and $2000 in fabrics.   It was only a few months before I had to hire help for sewing G-Flappers.  Soon I added a few brand names to my line up, like bum genius and Tiny Tush.  Soon my hallways were lined with shelves for product, my sons bedroom had rolls of fabric taking up half the space, my master bedroom looked like a diaper store.  So I rented a storage unit to store product, a couple of months later we rented ANOTHER storage unit.

Then we found the office warehouse in Allen Texas and we were able to move the business out of my house and I was able to reclaim my bedroom and my hallways :)  Employees came to work at a business instead of my house.  Customers were able to do pick ups at the warehouse.  At this point customers were asking us for regular hours to shop with us.  So we started regular hours in January 2011.  Over the course of the year we increased of the year we increased our hours of operation.  The warehouse was not an easy find for locals.  We were behind a security gate, and we frequently had to explain that gate to customers.

Our old warehouse store in Allen

Then in January 2012 we were told we were too much for the complex to handle, we had too many babies crying and too much traffic.  So it was time to find a REAL space.  In February 2012 we moved into the space we have now.  We now have over 3000 square feet.  About 1200 square feet is retail and classrooms.  The rest is sewing, offices, kitchen, and play/school rooms for employees children.  We love our current space.  We are now open more hours, and far easier for customers to find.  Customers can bring their strollers around the whole space now.  We now offer classes and events in store in our huge classroom.

As for Braden, he is now potty trained.  But you will still see him at the store.  He loves to babywear his teddy bears.  He and several other employees children are homeschooled at the store.  Products are now tested by employee’s little ones.  And Braden is enjoying his “retirement”.

Braden “babywearing” his bear on a photo shoot we had in February 2012

So what does our birthday mean to you?  We are having a huge celebration starting Saturday August 25th, running till Saturday September 1st.  We have prizes galore (see below), many donated by our wonderful suppliers.  And you will notice that there is a distinct purple theme going on.  Many of our suppliers were able to donate something purple as a prize.

How can YOU win a prize?  It is very simple.  Every $10 spent at Nappy Shoppe, both in store and online* earns a ticket.  You can then take your ticket/s and place them towards the prize/s of your choice.  That way you win something useful to you.  We will draw the winners on Monday September 3rd.  Local customers will have until Saturday September 22nd to come in and get their prize (or it will be redrawn), and online customers will have theirs shipped to them.  Also each time you shop with us through our birthday week we will give you an additional ticket.  This will be limited to one ticket per family per day.  Same applies for online customers who are participating in the event.  They must note it in the comments that they are participating.

Our prize display so far — there was more incoming when I took this shot.

* Online customers will only get a ticket if they mention they want tickets, and tell us which prizes they would like their tickets put towards.  Please make sure to use the comments box when checking out online to tell us where you want your tickets to go.  If no mention is made of this event with an online order, then no tickets will be allocated to this order.

Please note there will only be one prize won per family.  If a customer is drawn for a second time, we will redraw so that everyone has a good chance at winning a prize.

In addition to these wonderful prizes, we will have daily specials and events.  Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to be able to get updates on these as we will send them out every day.

Can Challenge – The Winners!!

We had a lot of fun doing The Can Challenge with our local dads.  Quite a few days took up the challenge we issued to show if they were the fastest diaper changing dad for Nappy Shoppe.  While no one was able to beat the National time of less than 1 second!!!! (I am super skeptical on that one!), we did get a winning time of 3.66 seconds.

Travis Grannan with his son Hendrik, and their basket of prizes for their 3.66 second diaper change!

Our winning dad won two bumgenius free time diapers, a Sweet Pea wet bag and a tube of Grandma El’s diaper cream.  The next 8 dads all won a bumgenius free time diaper.  Thanks to all of our wonderful dads who came in and took up the challenge.  It was a lot of fun.  One classic was one of my employees being hit with a diaper thrown over one dad’s shoulder.  We learned not to stand behind the dads after that!  You can see how our Dads did compared to others across the nation on the official Can Challenge Leader board.  It shows the top 50 dads nation wide.

Our top 9 dads!

Employee’s husbands were exempt.  And in full disclosure we ended up hiring Travis’ wife (the winner), but she did not start work until after the event was done.

And employee’s were disappointed that their husbands or significant others could not show their prowess.  So we will be having an in store competition for the rest of this month for the store dads (or granddads or uncles).  Winner of that timed event will win a $20 gift card for dinner at Covinos Italian Restaurant.  They have until August 31st to prove themselves.  Who do you think will win it?
